Autumn in the Hudson Valley


Where else can you find such iconic sites as the West Point Military Academy, the first Presidential Library, the longest pedestrian walkway, magnificent scenery, historic mansions, cultural treasures and unique attractions? Set along the Hudson River and dressed in its autumn attire, the Hudson River Valley in autumn is truly a gem.

Monday, October 6th – Oh, what a wonderful trip is ahead of us! This morning, we will make our way north but, who wants to just ride all day? Not us! So, today we will stop in Washington, DC to Autumn in the Hudson Valleyvisit the People’s House. This facility opened in September 2024 and was designed to bring the White House and its history to life. Before exploring the exhibits, we will have a speaker talk with us about first families of the White House, telling us stories about some of its most famous occupants – presidents, first ladies, presidential children, grandchildren, and even pets. Then, we’ll continue on our way to Edison, New Jersey for the night. (D)

Autumn in the Hudson ValleyTuesday, October 7th – This morning we will arrive in the Hudson Valley and begin our adventures with a tour of the prestigious United States Military Academy at West Point where we will learn about the famous people who had an impact on it and the pageantry of military traditions. It is a place that has shaped our nation’s leaders for over 200 years. It is a wonderful way to connect with America’s past and at the same time, enjoy the magnificent scenery of this institution that is nestled on the banks of the Hudson River. Afterwards we will go to the elegant Thayer Hotel located on the grounds of the military academy. It will be the perfect setting for a relaxed and delicious lunch. We Autumn in the Hudson Valleywill then travel to Poughkeepsie, New York and stop at Vassar College’s amazing Frances Lehman Loeb Art Center. This lovely teaching museum includes over 18,000 art pieces, including ones by artist greats, like Pablo Picasso and Georgia O’Keeffe. It’s truly impressive. And adjacent to the art center is an outdoor sculpture garden, complete with soothing little waterfalls. Then it’s off to unpack our suitcases for we will be in the same hotel for three nights. Yippee!! Tonight’s dinner will be delicious and our views over the Hudson River will make it even more special. (B, L, D)

Autumn in the Hudson ValleyWednesday, October 8th – After breakfast we will set out for an enjoyable day of exploring this magnificent area. We will begin with a guided tour of Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s home: Springwood. This was FDR’s lifelong home serving as his primary residence from his birth in 1882 until his death in 1945. It was opened to the public a year after his death and today visitors can see it as it actually was during his final days. Later we will enjoy a self-guided visit of FDR’s Library, the first official Presidential Library. It houses an impressive collection that reflects over the challenges and success of FDR. It is a library that truly pulls you into the past and the decisions that had to be made. Autumn in the Hudson ValleyAfter lunch we’ll travel to the village of Rhinebeck, in the heart of the Hudson River Valley. As you stroll through this picturesque village, you’ll discover quaint shops, lovely cafes, and the warm, welcoming vibe that makes it such a beloved destination. You’ll get a true taste of life in the Hudson River Valley. From interesting history to homes, quaint towns and beautiful scenery, this will be a wonderful day. (B, D)

Thursday, October 9th – Today we will continue our adventures by visiting Kykuit, a stunning hilltop estate that was built between 1906 and 1913. It was the home to four generations of the Rockefeller family, beginning with the industrialist John D. Rockefeller, founder of Standard Oil. Our guided tour will highlight the lives of the Rockefeller family and their contributions to philanthropy, conservation, business, government, and the arts. After lunch we will travel to Tarrytown to tour Lyndhurst Mansion, which is considered one of America’s finest examples of Gothic Revival architecture. Autumn in the Hudson Valley The lush gardens with the Hudson River as a backdrop are the perfect setting for the mansion tour. We will take a guided tour of this stately home, decorated with 175 years of original period furniture and decorations. It is considered a must-see when visiting this area. Our next stop will be the charming town of Beacon. You’ll have time to relax and have a cup of coffee or browse through their shops and interesting artsy areas. Then it’s off for another delicious dinner before returning to our hotel. (B, D)

Friday, October 10th – Today we will begin our journey south, but we just can’t leave this beautiful area without two more stops. We’ll start the morning by enjoying Autumn in the Hudson Valleythe magnificent paranoic views from the longest pedestrian bridge in the world, Walkway Over the Hudson. Our guide will point out notable sites and share the interesting history as we walk over the Hudson. And if we have timed it just right, you will see unparalleled views of the Hudson River Valley, dressed in vibrant reds, oranges and yellows. Fingers crossed! Then we’re off to the National Purple Heart Hall of Honor. Autumn in the Hudson ValleyWhile there you will take an incredible journey through military history and of course, be reminded of human sacrifice and the cost of freedom. While there you can also search the data base of Purple Heart recipients. It is quite a touching place to visit. After lunch, we will start our journey south, stopping in Glen Mills, Pennsylvania for the night. (B, D)

Saturday, October 11th – We are in a most interesting part of Pennsylvania and so we will make two stops before getting home. Autumn in the Hudson ValleyKennett Square is the mushroom capital of the world, so we will stop to learn about growing mushrooms and then a couple miles away we will stop at a world-famous Longwood Gardens. You’ll be able to meander along the walkways or explore their newly enlarged and renovated conservatory. Either way, their annual Chrysanthemum Festival displaying thousands of vibrant, colorful chrysanthemum blooms will be breathtaking. And then as always, our adventure must come to an end, so we will continue on our way home but what great memories we will have of our time in the Hudson River Valley during autumn. Just perfect!
